From The Desk of Chairman
Warm Greetings to everyone!
It is indeed an honour for all of us to be associated with Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth , an Institution that has completed a glorious journey of 100 years. This Vidyapeeth was inititated as a memorial for Lokmanya Tilak. The school likes to echo the philosophy propagated by Lokmanya Tilak. Lokmanya Tilak always envisioned a modern, progressive and Independent India. He promoted the spirit of self reliance among the citizens of our nation. Even in Pre Independence times, Lokmanya Tilak strongly believed that formal education and indigenous industries would be the key to the liberation and independence of the Indian citizen. Lokmanya Tilak believed in a holistic approach for the progress of our nation. He believed that focussing on skill development would lead to employability for our citizens which would subsequently lead to self reliance and help to build a strong, modern and progressive nation. In order to support this agenda, Lokmanya Tilak proposed the four fold program for our Nation. It consisted of Swarajya, Swadeshi, Boycott and National Education. Lokmanya began his strife for National Education through various activities. He founded the New English School and the Deccan Education Society. To make the people self reliant, he started a co operative movement and started a glass factory in Talegaon near Pune. This enabled to generate employment for the people which was a step closer towards building a stronger nation. Along with academic strength, Lokmanya Tilak believed in physical capability also. He believed that a strong mind needs to be supported by a strong physical body so that one can achieve success in whatever goal they have set for themselves. During his college years, Lokmanya Tilak realised that he was not as physically fit as was required for carrying out travel and other activities required for the Independence movement. He decided to work on his weakness dedicatedly. He then took one year off from his studies and practiced a strict physical fitness regimen during that time. His dedication paid off and at the end of one year, it is said that he could swim one length of the river while holding a stack of rotis in one hand. At Tilak Maharashtra Vidyalaya, we mirror Lokmanyas Philosophy for holistic development and high quality education. The Vidyalaya too lays strong emphasis on the overall development of the child and aims to provide strong, intelligent and capable citizens for our country.

House Names
The house names for the Vidyalaya are based on Lokmanya Tilaks teachings and philosophy. These concepts are relevant even in todays modern world. The house names were suggested by our Chairman, Dr. Pranati Tilak. She has written a noted explaining the significance of the house names and the values promoted by each of the houses.
Kesari
Karmayogi
Swaraj
Swadeshi
Kesari symbolizes the roar of the courageous and mighty lion that does not put up with injustice and untruth. Kesari also is significant because of the newspaper which Lokmanya Tilak used as a tool for spreading the message of independence and a strong, modern and powerful India to the people. Values that the house stands for: Courage, Fight against injustice.
Lokmanya Tilak believed in one point focus and consistency in aim and effort. He had set the goal of an independent India and worked relentlessly to achieve this till the end of his life. Lokmanya believed in working towards the set goal with minimum interest in the fame, recognition and appreciation that was a part of the journey. Values that the house stands for: Consistent effort, one point focus for achievement of your goal.
The concept of Swaraj can encapsulate the entire journey of Lokmanya Tilaks life. His sole aim was to liberate the people of our country and from the oppressive rule of the British and to achieve his dream of a modern, progressive and self reliant nation. He believed that true “Swaraj” would be achieved only after the people would not only be liberated , but also when they would be self sufficient in the true sense. Values that the house stands for: Self reliance, competency.
In his journey of making India an independent nation, Lokmanya also strived hard to make India an economically self reliant nation. He posed a boycott on all foreign goods thereby looking within the nation for production and manufacturing of goods. He believed that this would help our economy to flourish which would then result in a stronger, balanced nation. Values that the house stands for: Entrepreneurship, development of skills, building healthy self confidence.
History of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth
The Origin of the Vidyapeeth dates back to pre-independence period- 1921 when immediately after the demise of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, his follower Mahatma Gandhi mooted the India of establishing a University in his memory. As we all are aware one of the postulates of the four fold formula conceived by Lokmanya Tilak was National Education and the other three being Swaraj, Swadeshi, Boycott. The delegates of the first Maharashtra Provincial Conference on 6th May1921 under the president ship of Shrimant Shankaracharya of Karveer Peeth decided to have National University in Maharashtra and thus the present day Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth(TMV) was established. During the pre-independence period, degrees awarded in the faculties of Arts, Management, Commerce, and Engineering as well as the research work in Sanskrit and Ayurveda were world acclaimed and recognized. Similarly, in the post-independence period, the degrees of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth were equivalent to the degrees of other Statutory Universities. Deemed University Status Though late, i.e. after 66 years of establishment of Vidyapeeth it was only in the year 1987 that the University Grants Commission (UGC ) took the cognizance of significant work of TMV in the fields of Sanskrit, Ayurveda, Social Sciences and Distance Education and thereby on its recommendations, the Government of India conferred the “ Deemed to be University” status under section 3 of UGC act upon Tilak Maharastra Vidyapeeth, With this conferment of “Deemed to be University” status the Vidyapeeth gained recognition at national level.
